Severstal funds programme against child neglect

Cherepovets, 6/11/2013.

In 2006, the company Severstal started a social programme entitled ‘Doroga k domu’ aimed at complex measures to tackle child abandonment and neglect in Cherepovets.

Severstal’s Charitable Fund ‘Doroga k domu’ won an award from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and will receive nearly 8 million roubles towards the implementation of ‘The Inter-regional information and methodology resource centre for socially-oriented NGOs’ programme aimed at exchanging information, experience and best practice on preventing child abandonment and neglect. It is intended to implement this programme over a two-year period – from Oct 2013 to Oct 2015. This has been the third grant received from the Ministry, and would help to roll out this programme to other NGOs in Russia’s regions.

In 2012, ‘The Inter-regional information and methodology resource centre for socially-oriented NGOs’ held educational events for over 320 participants (practitioners and volunteers from 95 NGOs and 25 socially-oriented municipal unitary enterprises), held 7 seminars, 15 webinars and a conference for managers and NGO practitioners in which leading Russian and international experts participated.

The centre aims to create resources to exchange experience and best practice which the ‘Doroga k domy’ programmes has built to counter child abandonment and neglect. The programme will allow NGO practitioners in Russia’s regions to develop professional skills to help children and families, to achieve better results, to build a trilateral business-authorities-society partnership, which, in turn, would help stabilise the regional social environment’, said Natalya Poppel, Severstal’s Corporate Social Liability Manager.

For 2014-2015, the centre has plans to cover the following 21 areas of the Russian Federation: the republics of Buryatya, Karelia and Komi; Amurskaya, Arkhangelskaya, Vladimirskaya, Volgogradskaya, Vologodskaya, Kaluzhskaya, Kostromskaya, Kurganskaya, Leningradskaya, Moskovskaya, Murmanskaya, Nizhegorodskaya, Orlovskaya, Saratovskaya, Sverdlovskaya, Chitinskaya, Yaroslavskaya Oblast; Moscow and St. Petersburg.

It is envisaged that the unique experience of the ‘Doroga k Domu’ programme will be shared via a series of master classes, practical seminars, webinars, conferences; there will also be an open competition on projects and best practice among participants. In addition, this programme will help create new NGOs in Russia’s regions, and will help support the existing NGOs’ work aimed at strengthening family ties, tackling child neglect and youth offending.

‘Doroga k domu’ was started in 2006 as a personal initiative of Mr Mordashov, General Manager of Severstal, and was supported by the Cherepovets City Administration, and is one of Severstal’s charitable priority projects. In 2009, the programme was co-financed by Vologodskaya Oblast Administration and Moscow’s “Supporting Vulnerable Children Fund”, and rolled out to all of the Vologodskaya Oblast. Since 2011, the programme has been implemented in 6 of Russia’s regions (Cherepovets, Balakovo, Veliky Ustug, Vorkuta, Kostromuksha, and Olenegorsk) – cities where Severstal is present [sic.].
