More than 5 tonnes of blood and blood products collected on nationwide “Donors’ Saturday”

A special Donors’ Saturday, initiated by the Health Ministry and the Federal Medical and Biological Agency, was held throughout Russia on 1 August, with blood donation organised in 189 towns and villages. More than 10,000 people donated blood, and more than 5 tonnes of blood, including plasma, were collected.  The largest number of donors came forward in Rostov and Sverdlovsk Regions, Krasnoyarsk Krai, and in Bashkortostan and Dagestan. The largest number in relation to the local population as a whole were in Astrakhan, Ivanov, Murmansk, Ryazan, Rostov, Saratov, Sverdlovsk and Ulyanovsk regions, in Altai, and in Bashkortostan, Dagestan, Kalmykia, Komi, Mari-El, Tatarstan, the Chechen Republics, and Krasnoyarsk Krai. The day before Donors’ Saturday there was publicity for the opportunity to give blood on a voluntary basis by means of press conferences, public meetings, work by volunteers, information booths, and radio and TV announcements, as well as phone hot lines for the public. 14,000 potential donors rang the Blood Transfusion Service for information on where, when and how to give blood. About 100,000 participants sent their photographs for a national donors’ card which will be set up this year. In some cities Donors’ Saturdays have become a tradition. This first all-Russian event was a success, so perhaps other cities will also make it a regular event.
