Orphans in Russia: Statistics


2008

Over 80% of the children in Russian orphanages fall 2 or more years behind in school by the age of 12. Those who fall behind never graduate from high school or are put on a "special needs" track where 9 years of education are only equivalent to 5 years at the normal level. Children in psycho-neurological orphanages are routinely deprived of any sort of education. In Moscow 10% disappear in the first year after leaving the orphanage, over 50% spend time in prison.

The situation has been rapidly deteriorating. By 2004, the number of newly registered orphans and children left without parental care reached 132 505.
