Food For Life, Moscow, has been working in the field of charity since the past 17 years. It served hot meals to the needy in the hot spots such as Spitak (Armenia, Earthquacke, 1998), Sukhumi (Abhaziya, 1992-1994), Grozny (Chechnya, 1995), Sri Lanka (2005) where our volunteers served over 2,000,000 hot meals.

At present we are focusing our efforts on feeding the needy elderly people in Moscow. Before Perestroyka practically all social services were being taken care by the Government. With the changes in the Russian political and economic structure the Government support of various social programs drastically cut down. On the other hand, most of both old and new Russian companies have not yet developed the culture of charity. Thus many of those who do need help became lacking protection and care.

By official data, at present in Moscow with its 15,000,000 population there are over 20,000 75-90 year old people who have honestly worked all their lives for the benefit of the coming generations and now in their circumstances can hardly break even. They get Government pensions of $50-80 a month with no help from relatives. To help alleviate this problem we are closely working with the Moscow Government social agencies who give us the lists of the names of their needy old people in their respective areas of responsibility. For the past year we have been organizing preparation and distribution of about 1000 meals a month. Now we are stepping into the next stage where we are ready to expand our service to 4,000 meals a month.
