Social Development Civil Society Fund, the World BankThe World Bank, 1818 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20433 USA +1 (202) 473-1000 kcobham@worldbank.org http://worldbank.org/civilsocietyfund, http://www.worldbank.org/ The purpose of the Social Development Civil Society Fund is to strengthen the voice and influence of poor and marginalized groups in the development processes, thereby making these processes more inclusive and equitable. Created in 1983, the CSF (formerly known as the Small Grants Program) is one of the few global programs of the World Bank that directly funds civil society organizations. It is a concrete tool to aid in the advancement of the Bank’s social development agenda to empower poor and marginalized groups. With funds from the Development Grants Facility, the program is administered through participating World Bank Country Offices reaching civil society organizations through transparent and competitive processes. Guidelines and application forms are available from the participating World Bank Country Office in January. The Small Grants Program makes decisions only once a year by June.Applicant organisations should apply at least four to six months in advance of the date of the grant activity. Applicants are advised to read the criteria and the application form carefully before submitting an application to the participating Country Office. Requests and proposals should not be sent to the World Bank Office in Washington, D.C. Who Can Apply?
The Small Grants Program supports activities whose primary objective is civic engagement. In addition:
Small Grants can not fund: Research programs, formal academic training programs, operational projects, ongoing institutional core support (such as equipment), scholarships, fellowships, study programs, individuals applying on their own behalf, or nonlegal entities. Proposed activities should not compete with or substitute for regular World Bank instruments; the proposed activity should be clearly distinguishable from the Bank's regular programs. Most grants are in the range of $3,000 to $7,000 with a maximum of $15,000. The Program rarely funds more than half of the proposed budget for an activity, and therefore prefers that its grants help leverage additional contributions from other sources. Applicant organizations are asked to describe how a grant from the World Bank might help them to raise matching funds from other donors. The Program is able to fund only a small percentage of the requests it receives. Many requests are declined, not because they lack merit, but because they do not match either the current objectives, or the criteria of the Program. Your activity may fall within the objectives and criteria, but be denied because the demand far surpasses the availability of funds. Before applying, it is advised to read the guidelines to determine if there is a match. To determine whether the country in which an NGO operates has a small grants opportunity from the World Bank, applicants should call the WBank Country Office or check the website. The World Bank Country Office in Kazakhstan is pleased to announce launch of the grant competition under the Civil Society Social Development Fund (formerly known as World Bank Small Grants Program, further on - CSF) for the total amount of US$ 45,000 for nonprofit, nongovernmental, nonacademic organizations of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Any institution involved in development broadly defined may apply for a grant. Usually individual grant cannot exceed US$ 5,000. Applications are accepted in the World Bank Offices in Almaty and Astana till April 2, 2010. Activities supported by the CSF are intended to promote dialogue and dissemination of information, and enhance partnerships with key players in support of the development process. In 2010, the CSF will support projects focusing on engagement of population in the development processes. Priority will be given to projects implemented in the rural areas. Special attention will be paid to projects aimed at building capacity of civil society organizations in identification of potential projects, project management, and leveraging funds. The CSF does not provide financing for political activities of any scope and level. Series of seminars will be conducted for potential CSF grant competition participants in February-March aimed at increased understanding of the CSF goals, purposes, and selection criteria by the target audiences. Dates, time, and venues of these seminars will be communicated through the World Bank internet site. Information on the CSF selection criteria, guidelines for participation, and application package can be found at http://www.worldbank.org.kz/ or obtained in the World Bank
