Counterpart International2345 Crystal Drive, Suite 301, Arlington, VA 22202 +1 (703) 236-1200 communications@counterpart.org http://www.counterpart.org/ After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Counterpart International was born from the Foundation of Peoples of the South Pacific (FSPI) to become a truly global organization. Counterpart worked closely with USAID to help rebuild the civil societies, dynamic economies, and vibrant democracies of the region. The focus of Counterpart in the former Soviet states was to strengthen communities in areas of health, education, and welfare of at-risk portions of the community. Since 1993 Counterpart has built, developed and strengthened over 10,000 non-governmental organizations in the former Soviet Union alone. Counterpart programs include humanitarian and relief assistance, education, healthcare, democracy and governance, food security, enterprise and business development, sustainable tourism and natural resource management. Some very popular programmes include ‘Civil Society’, ‘Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture’, ‘Global Health and Nutrition’, ‘Community and Humanitarian Assistance’ and special programmes on maternal health and child survival and on HIV/AIDS. ‘Civil Society’ Program supports individuals, communities, and institutions through access to partnership, knowledge and tools to build vibrant and sustainable civil societies, based on individual initiative, pluralism, civic consciousness and participation. Key practice areas include institutional development, advocacy, community mobilization, community foundation development, and conflict prevention and mitigation.‘Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture’ Program enhances the resilience of the world’s most vulnerable populations affected by disease, hunger, and conflict. ‘Counterpart’ achieve this through community-driven programming in Nutrition and Agriculture’, emphasizing responses to HIV/AIDS.‘Global Health and Nutrition’ focuses on improving access to and quality of care for the most vulnerable. ‘Counterpart’ works at both the policy and community level implementing urban and rural health programs in partnership with local Ministries of Health and NGOs. Through behavioral change approaches, they promote sustainable solutions in the areas of maternal health and child survival, reducing malaria and Tuberculosis, enhancing hygiene and sanitation, encouraging good nutrition and breast feeding, and managing diarrheal disease, acute respiratory infections and HIV/AIDS. Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program bridges the gap between emergency help and long-term development. CHAP has mobilized both communities and diverse donor resources to help the most vulnerable populations: the poor, children, orphans, the elderly, the disabled, refugees from war and victims of disasters. CHAP provides a bridge between immediate, basic needs and long-term development. Ensuring people have homes and food may only be the first step in developing a prospering society, but it is an essential one in helping communities help themselves long after the foreign aid disappears. On June 9, 2009 Counterpart International (Counterpart) announced that it received a five-year Cooperative Agreement from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement the ‘Global Civil Society Strengthening’ program. The Leader with Associates (LWA) will provide technical assistance, research, services and support for civil society work in USAID and US State Department presence and non-presence countries around the world. Efforts will center on the following core areas: 1) civil society strengthening, 2) media freedom and freedom of information, and 3) development program design and learning. Information on funding opportunities should be checked at the website. No |
